How to pass the Wisconsin knowledge test

  1. Read the handbook. Every question comes from the official Wisconsin manuals; the handbook page links to the agency's own copies.
  2. Practice test by test. Each numbered test mixes Wisconsin law with the national road rules, like the real exam.
  3. Read every explanation. Especially for answers you got right by guessing.
  4. Simulate the real exam on the category page when you pass the tests comfortably.

Wisconsin written test format

Test Questions Pass mark Minimum age
Car 50 40 correct (10 mistakes allowed) 15 years
Motorcycle 25 20 correct (5 mistakes allowed) 16 years
CDL 50 40 correct (10 mistakes allowed) 18 years

Car. The Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook states the knowledge test has 50 questions and that 40 correct answers, 80 percent, are needed to pass. A separate highway signs test of 15 questions requires 12 correct answers. Applicants aged 15 to 17 may take the knowledge test online for a fee.

Motorcycle. WisDOT requires a motorcycle knowledge test on rules of the road for cycle operation and sets the minimum age for a cycle instruction permit at 16, but it does not publish the number of questions or the passing mark for the Class M test. The figures shown apply the 80 percent standard WisDOT uses for its other knowledge tests and are not confirmed.

CDL. WisDOT states the general knowledge test for Classes B and C has 50 questions covering sections 1 to 3 of the Commercial Driver's Manual and that a passing grade is 80 percent or more correct answers. A commercial learner permit requires an applicant to be at least 18, and interstate operation requires 21.
